In this episode Vanessa and Casper wonder at the duality of promises. A promise only has to be made when something is out of one's control. So there is a beauty in promises, but also a sadness. The beauty is in the desire to make order of the world for the object of the promise. The sadness is in the fact that there is no control in our ability to keep them. All promises are promises to try.
But there are different kinds of promises besides vows. Hermione shows a lot of promise. Her studies are promising. Harry is a promise of a brighter future- a future without the Dark Lord.
We discuss Hogwarts' promise to reward you with its intimacy the longer that you know it and wonder if that is true of other places as well (including the NYC subways).
We practice sacred imagination again; imagining what it would be like to be Harry in Professor Snape's class... putting ourselves into Harry's shoes and wondering what that dungeon must feel like.
